Oh you know the one, the Roubo, or French Woodworking Bench. They claim it’s “The Ultimate Bench”, the last bench you’ll ever need… And yes, it’s sturdy, it’s solid, it’s a beast of a bench. It’s loaded with good quality construction grade yellow pine that is perfect for this bench.
This version is dimensionally stable and weighs much more than its softwood twin. It has plenty of dog holes and a gap down the center for all sorts of workholding configurations, and it doesn’t have a vise since I enjoy using a Moxon-style one. In addition to being heavy, the plywood is replaceable. Going forward, this bench will not require any flattening since the top layer can be swapped out if the damage gets too great. Two recent developments for me have been a brisk wake-up call.
So spade bits, a jigsaw, and a rasp get me to a point where the vise screw can fit the bench. Usually, I would cut the mortise first and then fit a tenon accordingly. Here, I went reversed and did the tenons first and then marked out the mortises.
But, it doesn’t mean that you don’t need to have a working dust collector in your woodshop. A DIY dust collector is just an additional dust collection for you to minimize your woodshop dust.
